5th Grade Spelling List
Poem of the Week
Lighthouse
This giant white
Land candle burns
The edges of
The fog by turns.
The lonely keeper
Of the flame
Illuminates
One picture frame.
A ship returning
Welcome light
And slipping safely
Through the night.

The fog by turns.
The lonely keeper
Of the flame
Illuminates
One picture frame.
A ship returning
Welcome light
And slipping safely
Through the night.

Information
This is my first post of the school year. During normal weeks, students will see the weekly poem. A piece of art pertaining to the poem will be due on Tuesdays. The poem will be recited from memory each Friday. Please help your child by having her/him practice in front of you a few times. In addition, each Friday students will take a spelling quiz on the weekly spelling words from our new Journeys language arts program.
For the first week and a half the schedule is different. The poem art for Jellyfish Stew is due Friday, September 11. The same poem will be recited by students on Friday, September 18. The first spelling quiz will also happen on Friday the 18th.

Poem of the Week
Jellyfish Stew
Jellyfish stew, I’m loony for you,
I dearly adore you,
Oh truly I do,
you’re creepy to see,
revolting to chew
you slide down inside
with a hullabaloo.
You’re soggy, you’re smelly,
you taste like shampoo,
you bog down my belly
with oodles of goo,
yet I would glue noodles
and prunes to my shoe,
for one oozy spoonful
of jellyfish stew.
